JOCELYN HAS BEEN FEATURED ON:

The health impacts of plastics in our lives, particularly disruption of hormonal pathways, are become ever more apparent. While most people are aware of the dangers of BPA, there is mounting evidence that BPA-free plastics are also unsafe, so we are on a mission to replace the plastic in our kitchen with glass, stainless-steel and wood options.  Here’s some of the top changes we made in our kitchen on our journey to becoming plastic-free!

1. store bulk food in glass jars rather than plastic bags – we bought a bunch of mason jars and got labelling! Some bulk food stores will even allow you to weigh a jar before you fill it up, so you can skip the plastic bag completely – otherwise transfer the food from plastic bag to jar once you get home

2. buy items in glass jars rather than plastic – we were able to find coconut oil, olive oil, nut butters, salsa, etc that were sold in glass-  it’s amazing how many options there are!

3. use a stainless steel water filter rather than a plastic Brita – we opted for a Big Berkey from Water Matters and are loving it

4. ditch the plastic kettle – we’re opting to use our stovetop pots instead, but there are many steel kettle options as well

5. trade out the ikea plastic dishes – since break-proof is still a priority with kids around, we bought a set of stainless steel cups, straws and bowls from the local Indian store (ceramics and glass still fantastic for adults)

6. opt for stainless steel tupperwares – we were using glass instead of plastic, but found they broke easily and were too heavy so we went with the Onyx spill proof containers and are loving them (we also have their popsicle-mold and love it!) – Donald’s Market in New Westminster carries many Onyx products

7. switch to stainless steel water bottles – again we found glass to be too heavy/breakable, but we found loads of great options in stainless steel, particularly with Kleen Kanteen

8. look for options for your cooking items – wooden spoons and mixing bowls, glass measuring cups, stainless steel colanders and mixing spoons are readily available

9. keep chipping away at whatever you see that needs a swap! once you start getting rid of plastic you’ll see it everywhere!
