Women have long tracked their ovulation to optimize their chances of conception – based on observation and understanding of their bodies’ cycles. I teach these science-based strategies in my online fertility program and in my clinic, including how to track basal body temperature to identify your peak fertility days.
Newer technologies promise to help bolster fertility awareness with even more precise results. Ovulation predictor kits (OPK) are a popular way to feel greater confidence for those trying to conceive. But how precise are theses kits, really?
A recent study compared five popular at-home OPKs to test their accuracy at detecting ovulation and their ease of use. The researchers tested Easy@Home, Wondfo, Pregmate, Clearblue, and Clinical Guard over 97 days with participants who were tracking their ovulation.
All the kits showed high accuracy, ranging from 91.75% to 96.90%, meaning they can reliably match blood test results. While Easy@Home, Wondfo, and Pregmate had slightly higher sensitivity, the overall accuracy and easy user experience were similar across all five kits.
It’s important and empowering to understand your body’s fertility cycles and track ovulation, and this study shows that OPKs can provide additional confidence in your planning, no matter which brand you choose.
It’s certainly a good thing to have more tools to track your fertile window – and plenty of options to fit your needs and budget!
