JOCELYN HAS BEEN FEATURED ON:

Resveratrol is a popular supplement in the anti-aging world, due to its anti-oxidant-like properties. It’s part of a group of compounds called polyphenols that protect the body against damage – found mainly in the skin of red grapes, but also in red wine, berries and peanuts.

Anti-oxidants are always on the radar for preserving egg and sperm quality, which are very vulnerable to oxidative damage during their 3-month maturation process. A new joint US-India systematic review has studied the effects of resveratrol on male fertility and sperm preservation. It found the strongest evidence in in-vitro studies where resveratrol was used to protect spermatozoa against damage due to freeze-thaw cycles during cryopreservation (when a sperm sample is frozen until future use). Evidence was also found in in-vitro studies for fresh samples and protection of cell lines.

To date I have been prescribing resveratrol to my female fertility patients (at a dosage of 200mg trans-resveratrol per day) – I’m excited to potentially bring this into male fertility treatment plans as well!

I hope you have found this helpful, and do let me know if you have any questions!
